Technical Presentation
Topic: Optimization of VAV Systems
Presenter: Marites Calad, Norman S. Wright
Marites received her BS in Mechanical Engineering from Santa Clara University. She worked at Notkin Hawaii Inc prior to Norman S. Wright.
She has been an active member of ASHRAE Hawaii chapter since 1997, and was the chapter president in 2006-2007. She currently serves Region X as Nominating Committee-Alternate and is to become the Region’s Assistant Regional Chair (ARC) in 2017.
Acutherm manufactures components for heating and air conditioning systems that make commercial buildings more comfortable, save energy, offer sustainability and can also reduce total installed costs. The components are called Therma-FuserTM variable air volume (VAV) diffusers. They are used in VAV air conditioning systems which, instead of varying the temperature of the cooling air, vary the amount of the cooling air to maintain even room temperatures.
Main Program
Topic: Main Presentation on Federal South Center Building - Seatle, Washington
Presenter: Charles Chaloeicheep, P.E., WSP, Honolulu, Hawaii
The design aims to capitalize on both daily and seasonal heat exchange patterns to collect thermal energy when available and store it for use when required. A thermal storage tank containing phase change material (PCM)—a solution that melts at 55°F, is used to absorb heat from chilled beams for use in morning warm-up the following day. Similarly a ground loop acts as a heat source for efficient heat pumps in winter when there is not enough heat collected from the chilled beams.
