Leslie Taniyama, PSIG-Hawaii
Leslie (Les) Taniyama and wife Janice are the co-founders of Power and Systems Inspection Group PSIG-HI), a consultation and engineering firm which provides various technical services in Hawaii and other western United States. As an associate of PSIG-CA (California) DH Parr & Associates (Washington), Les’ disciplines include mechanical, electrical and energy engineering with work concentrations in HVAC design, facility consultation and forensic engineering.
After graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Hawaii, Les spent time as a contractor, manufacture representative of HVAC equipment and now, as a consultant for facility managers/owners and engineering design/consultant for design engineering firms.
Les provides for energy auditing, monitoring, data analysis, design and commissioning part, of what has been developed as, the “Performance Design” process. The performance design also provides for his post participation in the design that allows for fine tuning of the system and operator training.
As a Lifetime Charter Member of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), Les first received his Certified Energy Manager’s (CEM) designation in 1997 and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional and Certified Demand Side Manager later. Besides his many years as a member of ASHRAE, Les is also a member and V.P. of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), Hawaii Chapter, where he participates in providing education for facility and working engineers. Les and Jan sits on various Honolulu facility staff committees, provide development assistance (as part of IFMA-HI) for the University of Hawaii at West Oahu Facilities Management degree program and mentorship for the Kamehameha High School Robotics Team.
Presentation:
Evaporative Cooling Technologies; its Application and Operation
Evaporative cooling technologies come in many forms and their individual functional performance provide for cooling at different efficiencies with different limitations. Our design team has for more than 20 years studied the different designs for evaporative cooling and will, in the presentation, describe various considerations for each. The presentation will attempt to provide for the wide range of equipment options for various applications. Besides the maintenance requirements for the fans, motors, nozzles and valves, water treatment of the condenser system is critical to the performance of the AC or refrigeration equipment as well as the evaporative cooling equipment.
The presentation will show:
- What type of evaporative cooling equipment are available and what are their functional and operational differences?
- What is CTI certification and its importance?
- We will also explore what options in the design criteria when considering the wide range of equipment and types. Besides a discussion on the previous best practice designs of evaporative cooling, other less than standard design methods will be introduced.
- Each different type of evaporative cooling equipment require different maintenance. We will look at what are those maintenance considerations and their individual options, including water treatment.
- The NEXT crisis after the Energy Crisis; Water.
Do’s and Don’ts
- Selection of equipment reasons why or why not.
- Selecting the equipment to meet the function and efficiency.
- Laying out your equipment properly.
- Equipment operation warning.
- Water treatment signs for system health. Take ownership of your equipment and its water quality.
