The ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter is pleased to welcome Joshua McDonough as Chapter Programs Chair. Joshua previously served in this role during the 2019–2020 chapter year and again from 2022–2025, bringing valuable experience and leadership to the position.
As Chapter Programs Chair, Joshua is committed to delivering engaging and relevant programs that provide value to members across the HVAC&R industry. His focus is centered on supporting John Fuller’s presidential initiative emphasizing sustainability, energy efficiency, and the advancement of innovative building solutions. Through thoughtfully planned technical sessions, networking opportunities, and educational programming, Joshua aims to continue fostering professional growth and industry collaboration within the Hawaii Chapter.

Topic: VRF Systems
Presenter: Ruben Whillmarth
Ruben Willmarth has been working in the engineering, construction and manufacturing industries for 15 years.
He began his career as an HVAC Design Engineer for a well-known MEP firm in Ontario, CA after graduation from Cal Poly Pomona. He later worked for both a commercial HVAC and Power Generation Design-Build contractor for 6 years before joining a manufacturer in 2005.
Ruben's experience in commercial design & installation includes Schools, Hospitals, multi-story office buildings, and industrial process cooling including mid-size data centers. It also includes cogeneration, standby power, energy studies, Solar HW systems, and other integrated aspects of systems design & construction. Ruben is currently a member of ASHRAE, and is the Western Regional Sales Manager for Carrier's newly expanded Ductless & VRF group. He has facilitated the design & installation of hundreds of VRF projects.

Topic: Hawaii Energy
Presenter: Michael Chang
Michael is part of the “Hawaii Energy” team who is working to achieve the critical need of reducing the State of Hawaii’s economic dependence on foreign fossil fuels through consumer investments and operational changes that result in energy use reductions and the control of energy use that enables the maximum use of renewable energy.
His role is to guide the identification of target markets where there are energy savings opportunities and develop programs that assist residential and commercial energy users address the common and specific barriers to each group to achieving energy efficiency in their homes and facilities.
Michael has gained a broad range of energy experience gained from 23 years in the energy industry, helping local businesses to identify ways to cut energy costs, develop compelling projects, obtain viable financing, implement energy-saving actions that achieve energy-efficiency goals and most importantly how to maintain the persistence of the savings. He has served as Honolulu Branch manager at Johnson Controls, Commercial Energy Efficiency Program manager at Hawaiian Electric Company and as a Seabee Construction Electrician in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
Michael earned a Mechanical Engineering Degree and an MBA from the University of Hawaii.
