The ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter is pleased to welcome Joshua McDonough as Chapter Programs Chair. Joshua previously served in this role during the 2019–2020 chapter year and again from 2022–2025, bringing valuable experience and leadership to the position.
As Chapter Programs Chair, Joshua is committed to delivering engaging and relevant programs that provide value to members across the HVAC&R industry. His focus is centered on supporting John Fuller’s presidential initiative emphasizing sustainability, energy efficiency, and the advancement of innovative building solutions. Through thoughtfully planned technical sessions, networking opportunities, and educational programming, Joshua aims to continue fostering professional growth and industry collaboration within the Hawaii Chapter.

Technical Presentation
Topic: How VRF Operates
This presentation will cover the technology of VRF, how it operates, why it is efficient, specific technologies to the VRF systems, and concludes with examples of VRF and questions.
Presenter: Bret Elton, LG Electronics
Bret Elton, is from Salt Lake City entered the HVAC trade as a service tech in 1994. He completed the refrigeration apprenticeship for the local refrigeration union. Bret served as a service tech, service manager, and sales for Hi Tech mechanical in Salt Lake for 13 years. Carrier Corporation acquired Hi Tech in 1998 when became a Carrier employee. Bret worked in sales for Carrier from 1998 to 2012. Presently he works for LG Electronics.

Topic: Roundtable Discusion on DDC Controls
The moderator will ask the speakers a series of questions and each speaker will be given a set amount of time to address each question. The questions range from things like installation issues that the speakers have seen on various projects, what each speaker sees in the future of HVAC controls, and much more!

RJ Ritter, Area Contracting Manager, Trane
RJ has been the Controls Manager for Trane Honolulu since 1992, responsible for engineering and implementation of all Trane control projects. In addition to controls responsibilities he has been the Turnkey Contracting Manager since 2004. He works directly with customers to develop solutions for existing building turnkey and controls projects and provides training and support to engineering and contracting firms on controls issues. RJ is a recognized leader in the controls industry in Hawaii, having been invited to speak on many occasions at ASHRAE seminars and University of Hawaii mechanical engineering classes.
Rolf Klein, Developer of Sales and Marketing and Co-Owner, Hawaii Energy Systems LLC
Rolf Klein is a graduate of Western Michigan University, where he earned his Bachelor degree in industrial marketing, and minored in business communications. Since college, Mr. Klein has worked for Hawaii Instrumentation and Controls, STAEFA Control Systems, CSI-AMF Control Systems, and GTE-Sylvania Lighting Systems.
Ken Richardson, President, Island Controls Inc
Ken Richardson is the President of Island Controls, Inc., a Building Automation and Commercial Air Conditioning Service company, with more than 35 years of experience in the mechanical contracting field. Ken started his career in the United States Air Force where he worked with Aircraft Electronics & Avionics systems. From there, he decided to go into the HVAC industry where he has worked for Johnson Controls and Heide & Cook. In 2004, Ken decided to start his own company, Island Controls. Ken also serves on the board as the President for the Plumbers and Mechanical Contractors Association (PAMCA).
Robert Bittner, Systems Engineer, Johnson Controls Inc
Rob is a Systems Engineer II with Johnson Controls, Inc. for the major projects in the Western Region. Under general direction, he is responsible for the design, configuration, and operation of complete building control systems including fire, security, and other low voltage control subsystems (i.e. lighting, nurse call, data networks, etc) to meet the intent of the project requirements. Rob's background includes studying Mechanical Engineering at New Mexico State University, joining the Sheet Metal Workers Union in New Mexico, working for various Andover Controls System dealers, and now at Johnson Controls, Inc.
