Topic: Single Zone VAV - Energy Savings with Precise Control
VAV systems or variable air volume systems have been around for a while and have been used to save energy for spaces with multiple zones. A VAV system in HVAC design is a system that will modulate the air volume being supplied to a zone based solely on the requirements of that zone. This allows the system to slow its fans down when zones become satisfied or do not require additional cooling/heating. When the fans slow down, less cooling is required allowing the compressors (in a packaged unit) or chillers (in a central plant situation) to work less which in turn saves energy. What if your space has only one zone but you still want the energy savings of a VAV system? That is where single zone VAV systems come into play. A single zone VAV system will modulate the airflow and cooling based on the requirements of a single zone. Reducing the fan speed not only saves energy but it comes with an added benefit of decreasing the sound produced from the unit. Further enhancing the performance of a single zone VAV unit are options such as variable speed/capacity compressors and humidity control allowing for a high degree of control over ever changing space conditions. In today’s economy, energy savings is of utmost importance. Single zone VAV systems save money while providing great versatility and performance to meet any HVAC application.
Presenter: Brett A. Smith, Senior Regional Manager @ AAON
Brett Graduated Oklahoma State University May 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and has been a member of our local ASHRAE Chapter since 2002. He joined AAON in February 1993 as a product design engineer with the large commercial rooftop group. His Responsibilities at AAON included design of the unit cabinetry, refrigeration systems, heating systems, economizer controls, unit filtration and Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems. He was promoted to Applications group in March 1997 and Applications Manager in June 1999. His responsibilities included providing technical information to AAON’s independent manufacturer’s representatives, review of custom unit specifications and sequences of operation and issuing design guidelines to AAON’s product engineering group for special applications and unit features/options. He was again promoted to Northeast Regional Manager in April 2000. His responsibilities included interfacing with specifying engineers through AAON’s independent manufacturer’s representatives, field observation of equipment operation and provided corrective measures if required, pricing of equipment and the review of terms & conditions for sales of equipment. Brett is now the Senior Regional Manager as of November 2012 and he is continuing regional manager duties for the southcentral / southwest US as well as managing AAON’s regional manager and sales staff.
Main Program
Topic: The challenges and triumphs of designing and building a high performance building – Cancer Research Center of Hawaii
The Cancer Research Center of Hawaii is a six-story, 150,000-square-foot building providing world-class facilities for cancer biology, prevention and control, and epidemiology studies, as well as clinical and translational research. The new facility earned LEED Gold Certification and it was also the very first building in the state of Hawaii to implement an innovative active chilled beam air conditioning system. Our presenters will be discussing some of the challenges and triumphs of designing and building this innovative and high performance building.
Presenters: David Parke (Dorvin D. Leis) & Kevin Luoma (WSP)
David Parke
David is the Division Manager for the Sheet Metal and HVAC Departments for Dorvin D Leis. David has 30 years of industry experience and will be the contractor’s representative for the Commissioning and Air Balancing round table. David has overseen some of Hawaii’s most prestigious projects including the new Disney Vacation Club and Resort, Trump Tower Waikiki, Westin’s Princeville Ocean Resort on Kauai and the Lodge at Koele on Lanai. David graduated from the University of Central Florida and the University of Florida. David is an ASHRAE Member and Florida State Certified Mechanical Contractor
Kevin Luoma
Kevin has over 15 years of experience as a mechanical engineer and has a proven ability to apply his mechanical and sustainable design knowledge to a broad range of projects. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan, a licensed professional mechanical engineer in the states of California and Hawaii, a LEED accredited professional and a member of the ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter Board of Governors as the 2013-2014 Treasurer.
