Technical Presentation
Topic: Benefits of Airflow Measuring Stations
With the advent of new Title?24 standards and LEED certified buildings, the importance of measuring Airflow and ensuring proper Ventilation requirements have gained tremendous importance. Measurement and Verification requirement on projects with 3rd Party Commissioning Agents have made it important that the air flow measuring technologies be more accurate and responsive. The presentation will focus on various types of Airflow Measuring devices, benefits of Outside Air Measurement (saving energy & code compliance) and building stack effect control via airflow measurement.
Presenter: Mark McCrea (Ebtron, Inc.)
Mark has an undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and has more than 25 years of experience in the Building Automation and Controls Industry. He has worked at various organizations with different product lines – Alerton, Johnson, Siemens & Invensys. During his career, Mark has been gained tremendous experience on the sales as well and project management fields and is now a Regional Sales Manager with EBTRON Inc. He has been in California since 1999 and likes to travel, ride the jet ski & play tennis.
Main Program
Topic: UH Manoa Student Presentation of ASHRAE Competition in NYC
"HVAC System Design for Portable Refrigeration Device Research & Manufacturing Center"
The March 2014 technical program will feature the presentation of our students from University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). This presentation, which is basically the 2014 ASHRAE Student Design Competition, is the final design project submittal that is part of their curriculum requirements to complete the UHM ME Course 417 (Applied Thermal Engineering) as senior students, in order to obtain their matriculated degree in Mechanical Engineering.
The purpose of this project was to design an HVAC system for the new construction of the Portable Refrigeration Device Research & Manufacturing Center located adjacent to the College of Staten Island’s main campus in Staten Island, New York. The intention of this design was to appropriately size and select dependable, flexible and economical equipment to provide heating and cooling for the said research & manufacturing center over a 20 years life span.
The 2013 Fall Semester of UHM Course ME 417 (Applied Thermal Engineering) class consisted of two design teams working to come up with the "best" solution for the design & selection of HVAC systems for the said Center.
ASHRAE Standards 15, 55, 62.1, 90.1, and 189.1 were used as guidelines for the design. The ASHRAE Applications Handbook was also utilized for the said Center. The Carrier HAP 4.7 and Trane Trace 700 software were utilized to obtain the heating and cooling loads for the said Center.
The results of the heating and cooling load calculations were then checked against the 'first crack' estimates to ensure the results weren't absurd. A couple of designs were considered, one with the lowest initial cost and, one with the lowest life cycle cost.
In designing and selecting a system for any projects, there are many aspects to think about and many decisions to be made, including but not limited to the indoor air quality, energy conservation, high energy performance and system selection. Outdoor conditions, building envelope, room type, location of rooms and the activities in the various spaces of the research & manufacturing areas play a big part in the decision making.
Cost analyses were performed in pairing out the various systems to include their operating and maintenance costs prior to the final system selection. The goal of the cost analysis was to find a cost effective and efficient system that would still meet the needs of the Center.
The process of analyzing the requirements, designing a system, and selecting equipment for the system has helped broaden the students’ views on the HVAC&R industry. The project helped develop a better understanding on how important HVAC&R systems are, how they are selected, and how they are integrated.
At the request of Professor Ting, Kevin Luoma of WSP Group in Hawaii, and Garret Lau of MCE International as well as Mofazzal Mir of InSynergy Engineering Inc. have volunteered and offered their time generously to mentor and provide design guidance to our UHM students. The students were grateful for the kindness of their respective mentors.
ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter has sponsored the annual career fair at UHM to raise funds from corporate sponsors thus allowing these students and/or graduates from Course ME 417 (Applied Thermal Engineering) to participate at these events. The UHM Student Branch members have just got back from the Big Apple and their write-up describing their respective perspectives both events should be covered in our March 2014 newsletter.
Presenters:
Daniel Murakami received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in December 2013. He did his internship at Heide & Cook LLC for 9 months, while completing his undergraduate degree. Prior to his graduation, he was offered full employment as technical & engineering staff at ESI (Engineered Systems, Incorporate in Kailua.
