Directions
Please plan on joining us for this great family hike along and up the very popular Makapuu Point Trail. We will gather in the paved parking area at the trailhead located off Kalanianaole Highway (makai/ocean side) between Makapuu Beach and the Hawaii Kai Golf Course. After a very brief safety talk, we'll stroll along a roughly paved service road that wraps around a short ridge and up to a scenic lookout overlooking Makapuu Beach, Rabbit Island, an Waimanalo, enjoying beautiful ocean and mountain views of the southern tip of the island. There are also a few abandoned WW2 bunkers if you're brave enough to explore.
Bring your cameras as it should be whale watching season and they have been sighted fairly close to Makapuu Point. You can spot them by their impressive broaching leaps out of the water or by the distintive water spouts as they exhale at the surface. If you're a cactus fan, you'll have plenty to see and photo. There's even a large and exotic (and poisonous) pencil plant near the top of the trail.
If we're in luck and weather conditions right, we'll see hang gliders floating above our heads as they catch the updraft off the steep Koolau ridge face on the Makapuu side.
Also remember to bring a wind breaker/rain gear, water, a trail snack, sunscreen (yes, it does get very sunny!), and comfortable walking shoes. It can be pretty windy on this trail especially on the ocean side and the peak so please be aware hats, umbrellas, and loose objects may be blown away from you! (Hang on to your light weight children and significant other!)
There is no registration cost for this event but RP donations are always welcome (at your discretion.)
Come and join us for this easy, scenic hike and remember why "lucky you live Hawaii!"
