Technical Presentation

“Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS): Why use DOAS?” by Pete Teige

Join the speaker for a discussion of what DOAS is, why to use it, and how to design and apply it to your next project.  Learn the latest on DOAS efficiency metrics, MRE and ISMRE, in the 2015 version and upcoming versions of the standard for DOAS equipment, AHRI 920.  Did you know that ASHRAE 90.1-2015 has minimum requirements levels for ISMRE values, similar to requirements to meet SEER and IEER values?  Come join to learn more.

About the Speaker

Peter Teige is a Product Specialist Engineer with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Montana State University-Bozeman. Peter has been working in HVAC in Application Engineering/Manager roles for manufacturers since 1998, including a custom coil manufacturer and an air handling/desiccant dehumidifier manufacturer. Peter has been heavily involved in selling of Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS) and has participated for the last decade in the AHRI dehumidification committee, which wrote AHRI standard 920, ‘Performance Rating of DX Dedicated Outdoor Air System Units’. Peter’s areas of specialty include psychometrics, desiccant dehumidification, coil design, compressors and DX system design.

Main Program

“Displacement Ventilation” by Einar K. Frobom, PE

Displacement ventilation has been implemented in various approaches throughout North America and Europe for decades achieving increased thermal comfort for the occupied spaces compared to traditional mixed air systems.  Low velocity thermal displacement delivers supply air slightly cooler than room temperature air that keeps the conditioned air low to the floor until the airflow contacts a heat source such as an occupant.  This added heat increases the buoyancy of the surrounding air creating an upward convection current across the occupant’s body.

This form of ventilation provides delivery of fresh outside air directly to the occupied zone; thusly increasing IAQ and, per ASHRAE 62.1, is assigned a higher ventilation effectiveness as compared to a well-mixed system.

In addition to the benefits of displacement, we’ll be discussing the integration of active chilled beam technology for efficient treatment of the sensible loads in the space.  Similar to traditional overhead active chilled beams, a wall mounted device uses DOAS air as its primary air to induce low sound airflow through a system of engineered nozzles.  With no auxiliary air moving devices required in the induction displacement unit; the diffuser conforms to ANSI Standard 12.60 (<35dBa) for classrooms.

We’ll be discussing the entire system efficiencies and space benefits of this application solution which incorporate this diffuser type.  Through this review, the object is to present how thermal displacement operation promotes immediate removal of space contaminants; providing a healthier learning and working environments.

About the Speaker

Einar K. Frobom, PE, MBA; is the Director of Sales and Marketing for Carson Solutions.  His office is located in Minneapolis, MN.  With nearly twenty-five years of HVAC related experience, Einar’s involvement ranges from custom air handler design incorporating concepts such as air-to-air energy recovery, moisture transfer media, complex custom refrigeration systems, and enhanced IAQ solutions and DOAS systems.  In his current role he is promong the system benefits of quiet, efficient dis-placement ventilation combined with active chilled beam technology.  Einar holds the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration, both from the University of Minnesota.  He is also a licensed Professional Engineer within the state of Minnesota.
