The ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter is pleased to welcome Joshua McDonough as Chapter Programs Chair. Joshua previously served in this role during the 2019–2020 chapter year and again from 2022–2025, bringing valuable experience and leadership to the position.

As Chapter Programs Chair, Joshua is committed to delivering engaging and relevant programs that provide value to members across the HVAC&R industry. His focus is centered on supporting John Fuller’s presidential initiative emphasizing sustainability, energy efficiency, and the advancement of innovative building solutions. Through thoughtfully planned technical sessions, networking opportunities, and educational programming, Joshua aims to continue fostering professional growth and industry collaboration within the Hawaii Chapter.

Technical Session

 

“Do's & Don'ts of Controls”

by David Jimenez, PE, CEM

 

This presentation is focused on the latest available technology in the practical applications and designs of Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems. The first portion of the presentation will discuss the DDC Architecture from the top down. The second portion will touch on the most common design DDC solutions and critical do’s and don’ts. This program will help ASHRAE members understand Smart Building Automation controls and key design points to lookout for when designing their system.

About the Speaker

David Jimenez is the Strategic Account Sales Manager at Johnson Controls as a building systems and equipment professional with 16 years of industry experience. While earning a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Florida, David interned for Johnson Controls’ Energy Solutions division. During this time, David gained strong fundamental skills in optimizing building systems with life cycle cost in mind. Upon earning his undergraduate degree, David continued with Johnson Controls, taking on increasing levels of responsibility, leadings teams of engineers on projects along the eastern United States and internationally including Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines, Japan and South Korea. Throughout this time, David has helped numerous institutions ranging from K-12 schools, military installations, concert halls, local municipalities, universities, private commercial businesses and healthcare facilities realize hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of capital improvements, generating hundreds of millions in utility and operational savings.

“TAB Round Table” 

Building owners, property managers, and tenants are concerned about the cost-effective performance of the environmental systems within their respective buildings. This "green" goal can be best accomplished by having a building’s environmental system properly tested, balanced and/or commissioned by a Certified TAB Company. What can the owners, construction managers, and design engineers specify to deliver the highest level of results on their projects. The TAB contractors and Commissioning specialists weigh in...

About the Panelists

Martin Heede

Martin Heede is a 14 year veteran of the TAB industry.  He earned his TAB certification in 2010.  Martin’s role at TAB Engineers is quality control for reports, but he still goes out in the field sometimes to help the TAB technicians.  Martin spends his free time golfing, surfing or taking his two sons to the beach.  

Tabish Khan

Tabish Khan is a proud graduate of Kamehameha Schools, a graduate of UH Manoa with a BA in Economics, and a U.S. Army Veteran.  Tabish has 15+ years of TAB experience and was introduced to TAB at an early age working with his father, Ali Khan and their family-owned business HTBC Services & now Hawaii Test & Balance.  Tabish received his NEBB Certified Professional certification in TAB in 2013.  

Steve Smith, CxA

Steve has been in the industry over 30 years and has taught in the TAB apprenticeship program for over 15.  His experience and personality will be a great addition to the knowledge base you are putting together for the roundtable. He also spoke at Hawaii ASHRAE about TAB a few years back with Carey (ABH) and Ryan (TAB Engineers).
