Technical Presentation
Topic: ASHRAE Guideline 36: High Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems
Presenter: Reece Kiriu
Reece Kiriu is a Registered Mechanical Engineer at Taylor Engineering in Alameda, California. Mr. Kiriu previously worked as the Building Automation Systems Department Quality Assurance/ Quality Control Manager for a Building Automation Systems Contractor. He was involved in all aspects of Building Automation Systems projects including control system design, project management, programming, installation and commissioning. At Taylor Engineering, Mr. Kiriu has developed expertise in specifying building automation systems, developing sequences of operations, and commissioning. His experience in building automation system design and commissioning span mission critical facilities, central plants, museums, and large office buildings. Mr. Kiriu has been a member and key author of ASHRAE Guideline 36.
Mr. Kiriu will present on ASHRAE Guideline 36: High-Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems. He will review some of the relevant ASHRAE research projects, including RP-1353, RP-1455, RP-1515, RP-1547/1747, and discuss of how they informed the sequences included in Guideline 36; and provide an overview of the ongoing related research project, RP-1711 and explore how it will impact future updates to the Guideline.
Main Program
Topic: Student Presentation - Design of Four Story Mixed Use Office Building Complex at Istanbul Turkey
The May 2019 technical program will feature the students’ presentation from University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). The presentation will be a review of the design project that was submitted by the 2018 Fall Semester students for their ME 417 Course requirements in Applied Thermal Engineering. The students adapted and modified the design provided by 2018 ASHRAE Student Design Competition. The design team was formed to enhance the design project and to make the final presentation on May 8, 2019. The purpose of the project was to design the HVAC&R systems for a “Four Story Mixed Use Office Building Complex at Istanbul Turkey”. The said Building consisted of a restaurant, retail stores, various offices and residential lodgings. Design systems are intended to be dependable and economically viable for at least 20 year life span.
ASHRAE Standards 15, 55, 62.1, and 90.1 as well as the ASHRAE Handbook were used as the basis of design. A commercial software program was used to calculate heating and cooling loads for the proposed building. The students reviewed many systems and zeroed?in to two systems. The systems were compared using life cycle cost analysis, which included initial costs as well as operation and maintenance costs. In addition to the life cycle costs, other considerations included indoor air quality, energy conservation, energy performance and system selection.
The process of analyzing the requirements, designing a system and selecting equipment was instrumental in the student’s level of understanding of HVAC&R systems. As the students were involved in the process, they learned not only about designing a HVAC&R system but also in working as a team and the importance of seeking out people with the knowledge to help with questions and difficulties.
Presenters:
Ray Au, P.E.
Mechanical Design Engineer currently working for Pan?Pacific Mechanical LLC. He enrolled as a student Course ME? 417 in the Fall Semester of 2010 and graduated from UHM in Spring of 2011. In the past years, he was assisting Professor Ting as a mentor for Course ME-417 (a.k.a. Applied Thermal Engineering). As he completed his BSME (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering) from UHM, he came to discover his passion lied in thedesign / construction of HVAC&R systems. He started as a junior engineer at MEH (Mechanical Engineers of Hawaii). Spent his first?6 years at MEH, he learned the various design concepts for HVAC&R, plumbing and fire protection engineering. By 2017, he passed his P.E. (Professional Engineering) license test and decided to expand further his knowledge by joining a design?built contractor, which allowed him to have a greater exposure, more interaction with the other disciplines thus visualizing HVAC&R Industry from a different perspective. Ray has a four (4) years old son and a two (2) years old daughter thus providing him to balance a new life between his work and his family.
Michael Huang
Michael Huang is currently working as a Junior Engineer in the HVAC Engineering Department of TEC ? Thermal Engineering Corporation since 2018 when he obtained his BSME. Like his teammates, he registered in Course ME?417 during the Spring Semester of 2018 allowing him to use it as a stepping stone to secure a position in the HVAC Department. In his leisure times, Michael volunteered for “Team Kanaloa – Maritime RobotX Challenge” as the Finance Team Manager, Webmaster and Propulsion Team Member since 2016 to date.
Yiyang (Ian) Xiao, E.I.T.
Yiyang (Ian) Xiao, E.I.T., is employed as a Junior Engineer in the HVAC Engineering Department as well as in the Fire Protection Engineering Department of TEC Thermal Engineering Corporation since 2015. He came to Course ME?417 as a student in the Fall Semester of 2014. In the past years, he was also assisting Prof. Ting as student mentor. Ian has been working on the presentation with both Ray & Michael. When the “May 2019 presentation” comes about, he will be in Atlanta GA, as he has recently accepted an offer to work for a firm in Atlanta. Good luck to Ian and we wish him all the best in his new venture!
