Topic: HeatX Increases Heat Exchanger Performance While Inhibiting Corrosion and Biofouling

Oceanit conducted a case study of HeatX in collaboration with Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) at their Kahe Power Plant on West Oahu, protecting two seawater-fed shell and tube heat exchangers. The use of unprocessed water in heat exchangers and chillers creates significant problems such as scaling, fouling, and eventually corrosion of the metal exchanger components. Learn how HeatX significantly reduced biofouling and corrosion issues for HECO heat exchangers.

HeatX is water-based and contains no biocidal compounds. The omniphobic (water & oil repellant) nanocomposite properties create an extremely slick surface that releases bio films & growth. In addition to being non-toxic and non-VOC-containing, HeatX is non-insular and can function under extreme pressures and temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Presenter: Dr. Matthew Nakatsuka

Dr. Matthew Nakatsuka is a Senior Materials Engineer at Oceanit, where he leads a group dedicated to investigating new functional coating materials. Dr. Nakatsuka was a graduate of ‘Iolani School, received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and his PhD in Materials Science from the University of California, San Diego. He has worked at Oceanit since 2014, developing nanomaterials capable of imparting superhydrophobicity, corrosion protection, non-biocidal anti-fouling, reduced frictional drag, and enhanced cement bonding. A few of his current projects include an effort with the US Department of Energy to reduce gas leakage in natural gas transport pipelines, a contract with the Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate lead and copper leaching in water mains, a project to improve the efficiency of steam-condensing units for the National Energy Technology Laboratory, and field deployments of various coating systems with 3 major oil and gas companies.

Main Program

Topic: Facilities Engineers Roundtable Discussion

The main goal of this roundtable discussion is to get some insights into facility engineers’ needs regarding building/system design, construction, operations, maintenance, etc. This will help our community better understand how to support the teams of personnel that operate and maintain the buildings the we work in, design, build, and service.

Our experienced panel of facilities engineers represent a diverse mix of different types of buildings and facilities. The first portion of the discussion will be a moderated session with a list of questions for each of the panelists to comment on and provide feedback regarding a variety of different topics. During this session they will have the opportunity to share with us some of the things that we can improve upon as well as good things that they would like to see more of from our community. Following the moderated session, we will also have some time for a general Q&A session and open dialogue with all panelists.

Panelists:

Tony Moiso, CHFM, CEM

Director, Facilities Management at Pali Momi Medical Center

Tony Moiso oversees facilities operations for Pali Momi Medical Center. Tony has been with Pali Momi for over two years. Prior to coming to work for Pali Momi and Hawai‘i Pacific Health, Tony worked for Kaiser Permanente as Facility Director for eleven years.
